Everytime I see New York featured on the TV, or in a movie, I like to remember the time we visited there some years back. Quite simply, there just is not other city on earth like New York, everything you’ve heard is true and just about every compliment than can be paid to a city has been paid to New York. Of course, just like any city anywhere it has it’s pro’s and con’s and whenever someone asks me what to do and what not to do whilst in New York I always answer with two words…’dont drive!’.

Honestly, you really need nerves of steel to negotiate a car through New York traffic, even more so, you really need to be local. Even the locals are now looking for ways to get around that city without using their own cars. Fortunately they can avail themselves of services such as New Jersey car service. These guys know the city like the back of their hands and have become the way for many business people to get to places such as the airports. Safely and efficiently. Plus you don’t need to have a large amount of cash on you because they accept credit cards and corporate accounts.  Even though this service is being utilised by New Yorkers I would say if you were visiting you could do well to take advantage of this great service. And keep your nerves for the shops instead.

Have some seaweed dear

December 6, 2007 on 12:30 pm | In Culture, Magic | No Comments

Just imagine it: it is your first date and you really want to impress her so you book a fine restaurant, buy some great new clothes, slap on the cologne and turn up at her door. You knock, she answers, and you present her with a bouquet…of seaweed.  If the door does not get slammed in your face immediately then there is only one reason why…she is a dolphin.

That’s right. The way to a lady dolphin’s heart is with a nice wet clump of seaweed fresh from the ocean bed. And apparently it never fails for the guy dolphins!. A group of dolphins in Brazil were observed for a period of time when the males were noticed to be carrying various objects around the females during the ‘wooing’ ritual. Assorted objects were sticks, pieces of debris but it was the seaweed that did the trick.

We all know how intelligent dolphins are but how fascinating to know that they even have a ‘culture’ of courtship, something that is behavioural and not genetic. How romantic. But are all male dolphins as clued up to what women want as human males are?…maybe not. Probably that’s why we never saw Flipper with a wife.

A Pearl of a gift

December 6, 2007 on 11:57 am | In Culture, Miscellaneous | No Comments

I have always been fascinated by the process in which precious stones are formed. If you go to South Africa you can get the opportunity to visit the diamond mines; I have not as yet been there but it is high on my list of places to visit in the near future. I have though been to Coober Pedy in Australia though where we had the chance to visit the opal mines, now that was interesting!. Unlike diamonds, the opal looks pretty much the same when mined and ’set’ in a ring or whatever as it does while still in the rock.

I am definitely a ‘dry land’ type of person yet I would love to see how pearls are cultured. In the water, I know, but it so happens I am in the market for a nice piece of pearl jewelry for Xmas. Other than going pearl diving my knowledge will be restricted to viewing these beautiful items online. Having done a small amount of research so far I quite like the idea of South Sea pearls so looked at some sites, namely Pure Pearls. The little gems, are cultured in the warm waters of Northern Australia and are famed for their exquisite quality. I always thought that pearls only came in White, but they are available in Golden as well. I learned this at Pure Pearls by the way. When you are looking for a gift for ‘her’ you need to do your homework so you don’t get it wrong.

Of course buying jewelry of any kind is also an investment if you are looking for quality and wanting to spend a bit more than average; go for places like Pure Pearls that take the time to tell you about the origins and value of what you are buying so that you get your money’s worth.
