Relax with an ebook this Xmas

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

How often have you waited excitedly for a new release book to hit the shelves only to get to your local bookshop and find it it is ‘out of stock’?.  This has happened to us several times, especially with regards to those books featuring a certain young ‘boy wizard’ and his latest adventures. I am still trying to live down missing the initial release of the last episode!.

One great way to get the books we really want, when we want, is to go the ’ebook’ way. Now, at first, I was really sceptical about all of this but now I am a convert.  At Books on Board I can have the book of my choice downloaded instantly into my own computer and it is as easy as walking into the bookshop and paying over the counter. Well, easier really, as I don’t have to leave the house.  Whether you are into romance ebooks, Harry Potter, mysteries & thrillers, science fiction or whatever, this has to be the easiest way to get the book you want, and when you want it.

How’s your carbon footprint?

December 17, 2007 on 7:41 pm | In Culture, Technology | No Comments

Some time ago we had a couple visit who were ‘environmentalists’.  They had actually spent £500, each, more to get to our place by taking several coaches than if they had arrived by plane. ” We didn’t want to leave a carbon footprint ” so they said. They arrived with a couple of bikes in stow as well. These two people then turned out to be two of the most difficult people we have ever met. They wanted their towels and bed linen changed EACH day…even though such a thing is not environmentally friendly. They wanted extra soap, shampoo and airconditioning. All bad ‘emission-wise’. Funny how people chop and change their trendy views, eh?.

Now we are told that the simple act of cooking the Xmas dinner equals a carbon footprint of 6000 car trips around the world. 6000. Around the WORLD!. Who on earth does these studies?. Scientists (don’t we love’em?) have found that the nation cooking a turkey, stuffing and all the trimmings results in 51,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. And that inlcudes all the so-called ‘emissions’ released while raising each and every turkey.

Somehow folks I think we need to draw a line on all this. If we cannot sit down to our once-a-year Xmas feed without worrying about the darned environment then what have these killjoys done to our lives?.

Personally, we will be sitting down the the whole entire festive feast as usual this year. Cooked in the oven, with plenty of carbon dioxide to spare. Somehow it just wouldn’t taste the same any other way.

Do health supplements work?

December 15, 2007 on 10:51 am | In Culture, Miscellaneous | No Comments

The son of a friend decided to embark on a course of bodybuilding a while back and really threw himself into his new regime. In the process he bought all those health and fitness magazines aimed at guys and one thing I noticed when looking at them was the mindboggling array of supplements advertised. Powders, pills, drinks, energy bars and all bearing very scientific sounding names. And all very pricey!.

I wonder just how much good these things do if you don’t know enough about them. I would say that before buying and taking nutritional supplements you should really do your homework, and not only that, but buy them from a supplier who offers a lot of detailed advice and support. Many online companies just seem to focus on the selling side but others such as Supplements.net offer their customers full service covering what their needs are and basically what the supplements are all about.

If you are not too sure about supplements make sure you get all the advice you need first before you take them; that way you will get the most from them.
