Remember when batteries were needed?
July 6, 2008 on 7:32 am | In Culture, Technology | No CommentsMy how times have changed. I remember when batteries were what drove our childrens toys but now everything is ‘wireless’ – even remote control units are on their way out. I remember the original nintendo console and actually I liked it the best – not complicated and you didn’t look a fool sitting there with the control in your hand. Look at someone playing a Wii today – they stand up and wave their arms around…
That old sign ‘batteries not included’ need be changed now to ‘batteries not necessary’…

Babyboomers are leading the way
July 6, 2008 on 7:25 am | In Culture | No CommentsWhen you look back over the twentieth century the one aspect which really stands out with regards to human kind is how vastly human longevity has grown. Back in the 19th century the average woman could hope to live until her fifties - if she survived childbirth – and a fifty year old woman then looked as a seventy year old woman does now. Men, because they did not give birth, lived a few years longer, but like their female counterparts looked old before their time.
In the 20th century people began to live longer so that now the average lifespan for a woman is 80-something with men lagging behind at 70-something. Out of this has grown better healthcare for the elderly and now they have their own specific healthcare options such as medicare advantage which is tailored to address issues which affect those well past fifty and steaming towards their 80’s & 90’s.
Makes one wonder how long those babyboomers will stretch the human lifespan – do you think that one day it will be common for folk to celebrate their 110th birthday – and will middle age be around 70 rather than 50?

Google – like it or loath it
July 6, 2008 on 7:14 am | In Culture | No CommentsGoogle, whether you like it or not, reigns supreme on the internet today. What began as a great little idea by a couple of computer nerds has grown to become a global phenomenon…and made those two guys billions. And good luck to them of course…wish I had thought up Google myself.
What you do have to concede though is that it is a breeze to use, uncomplicated and convenient. ‘Googling’ has become part of our vocabulary and whatever, whoever you wish to find you can ‘Google’ it and locate it. Just try it – if you are job hunting for a sales job then do a sales job search just typing in ’sales’ and ‘job’ and see how many results you get. See?
