On to the Oscars!
January 21, 2009 on 5:52 pm | In Culture | No CommentsOnce the Golden Globes are over the time flies until it’s time for the Academy Awards – I have to admit that I really am a sucker for these award shows, I love them. And this time round I will be enjoying them especially more…
We splashed out and bought a home theater seating outfit just after Xmas so Saturday nights are a treat for me now as that is about the only time I get to sit down and watch a DVD. The Oscars will look so much more exciting this year!

Snail-pace broadband
January 10, 2009 on 6:17 pm | In Technology | No CommentsOne of the most annoying aspects of working online these days has to be when your internet speed is too darn slow and it is not all that uncommon either. Studies have revealed that customers are not getting the high speed broadband they are paying for with many getting just half the speed.
And it affects business too. Those who own vacation rentals will tell you that guests these days expect, among most features, high speed broadband in their vacation property and we know several people who have fielded many complaints this past year from disgruntled guests in this regard. People take along their computers on vacation and expect to use them as they are accustomed to at home and at work.
The study also showed speedy access of the internet depended on the time of day consumers logged on with busiest periods being late afternoon and between 9-10pm at night. Those experiencing the biggest problems received their broadband from old-fashioned copper wires, known as DSL, while firms using fibre optic cable were able to deliver a much swifter service.
Come on providers, get your act together!!

When a mystery is solved it ain’t so much fun
January 10, 2009 on 6:01 pm | In Magic, Science Fiction Technology | No CommentsWhen a wind turbine was recently put out of business during the night – damaged and a blade lost – people were quick to blame it on a UFO. And it had all the marks of something strange and inexplicable when locals reported bright flashing lights and a loud booming noise prior to the crash.
But now authorities have placed the blame on an unmanned stealth bomber – and it does not seem anywhere near as interesting an explanation as the former…does it?
Sometimes it is nicer, and more fun, when things cannot be explained away – a little bit of mystery always adds a touch of magic.
