In a way, yes. But not one of the shiny sparklers you see these days on the fingers of brides-to-be.

The history of engagement rings is interesting; the first recorded one given is dated from the 14th century when Archduke Maximillion gave his betrothed a ring.

Stone-age man was more earthy in his approach: when he found a woman he liked he tied her arms and legs together so she could not escape. Poor girl. When she agreed not to escape he untied her but she had to remain with a piece of twine around her finger.

Somehow I prefer the modern day version…
