Wear a helmet and save your life
March 18, 2009 on 12:05 pm | In Culture | No CommentsIt is very sad news regarding the actress Natasha Richardson and her skiing accident. Unfortunately accidents like this end tragically whenever head injuries are the cause and I often wonder why people do not bother to wear a protective helmet.
I know they do not look very chic but just consider how different the outcome could have been had Ms Richardson been wearing one…
In Australia the law was changed some years back when too many cyclists were dying from head injuries after an accident – your head fractures very easily. Since helmets became compulsory – not wearing one is an offence with a fine – deaths from head injuries have markedly fallen. And as children were commonly those killed that law has been a success.
If you value your head, wear a helmet.

The spy who watches you…
March 18, 2009 on 11:58 am | In Science Fiction Technology, Technology | No CommentsThe inventor of the world wide web has launched a stinging attack on plans to spy on the internet browsing habits of millions of people in their own homes. Personally I have always wondered just how long it would be until something like this came to be.
Internet providers BT, TalkTalk and Virgin Media are all considering a system known as ‘Phorm’, which would track the web pages that their 11million customers look at, but I wonder if consumers will be allowed the option of not having this system connected to their internet servers?
For instance, if you are browsing for hair loss treatment online, Phorm will log this and you could be contacted by manufacturers…
When you use the internet you want to use it often as an anonymous user but soon every single detail about yourself will be stored for use by advertisers. I don’t like this concept and hope that this does not eventuate.
