A dress made from bottles…!
April 13, 2009 on 4:21 pm | In Culture | No CommentsWell, the other day I bought one of those supermarket carry bags – the recycled type – and was fascinated to see that it was made out of recycled plastic bottles. It looked and felt totally different to the original materials believe me!
Now get ready for this!
Designers from Debenhams have come up with a £55 trouser suit that is made entirely from recycled plastic bottles – would you wear it…?
The bottles, which would otherwise have been destined for landfill sites, are cleaned and have their labels removed before being ground down into chips which are melted at a plant in Taiwan. The mixture is then refined and woven into a soft but hard-wearing type of polyester. Around 50 are used in each suit and looks totally natural.
It took 12 months to create the suit – how many of us though are THAT into the eco-thing…

Vacations are easier now than in Whicker’s time
April 13, 2009 on 4:16 pm | In Culture, Travel | No CommentsI have been watching the recent travel shows of Alan Whicker who was the pioneer of todays modern travel shows. How times have changed.
Back when he was doing his shows in the 60’s and 70’s booking a cross America trip was an arduous ordeal; today you just use a system like Westgate and they do everything for you in one hit.
I like what Whicker has been saying about todays batch of travel presenters and he is correct. His shows were full of information and culture – today a presenter only has to look good in a bikini to get a job presenting a travel show!

New population of Orangutans found!
April 13, 2009 on 4:11 pm | In Miscellaneous | No CommentsHeralding a wonderful discovery a new population of up to 2,000 orangutans has been discovered in a remote, mountainous corner of Indonesia.
A conservationist team surveying the forests nestled between ragged limestone cliffs on the eastern edge of Borneo island counted 219 orangutan nests, indicating a ’substantial’ number of the animals. This is indeed a marvellous find as these unique creatures are under threat of extinction.
The team also encountered an adult male, which angrily threw branches as they tried to take photos, and a mother and child. There are an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 orangutans left in the wild, 90 percent of them in Indonesia and the rest in neighboring Malaysia.
They are increasingly under threat due to the diminishing forests and food supply as man raids the forests to produce palm oil.
