How a camera ended a coma
May 3, 2009 on 8:21 pm | In Culture, Technology | No CommentsWeird title you have to say but it is true. My partner’s uncle has been languishing in a coma-like state for two years in a nursing home and for the most part her totally unresponsive and uncommunicative.
His uncle was suffering from mesothelioma (a legacy of his days as a bricklayer in factories) and the onset of alzheimers disease.
The strange thing is what happened when we visited him a while back. ‘Uncle’ had always been a big collector of cameras and had always loved photography. My partner was taking a picture of him while he was sitting as he usually does – in his own little world – and as soon as the camera appeared the old man suddenly came to life!
He leaned forward and grabbed the camera and muttered a few things; he looked it over and then handed it back to my partner. Then he went back into his silence again. Obviously something from his past woke something up in him – it was touching to witness however he remains quite ill today.
