Odd museums
June 8, 2009 on 7:47 pm | In Culture | No CommentsIt is funny what kinds of things people collect and even funnier what are collected together and turned into a museum…
There is a museum for diseased brains in Lima, Peru; a museum for wallpaper in France; a museum for discarded objects and office furniture in Illinois, and – believe it or not – museum especially dedicated to people who do not tell the truth…liars!
But I think that a certain place in Hamburg, Germany wins the prize…it houses a collection of objects found in the city’s sewers. Yuk…

Flying is still safer than driving the car
June 4, 2009 on 8:20 pm | In Travel | No CommentsThe latest air disaster which has seen an Air France Airbus 330 disappear en route from Brazil to Paris reads like every nervous flyer’s worst nightmare. Terrible weather, a storm, horrendous turbulence and then the theory that the pilots slowed the plane down too much in navigating the turbulence so that it stalled mid-air and plunged into the sea certainly makes me want to think twice about flying again.
It is so sad to think – to know – that there would have been a good number of people on that plane who would have been nervy flyers and then to have been involved in what they would have been sitting there dreading…
Still, it is well known that the trip to the airport in the car carries far more risks than the actual flight and to be true there are thousands of planes criss-crossing the skies all the time without incident. All the same, as the news trickles in about this latest disaster people will be considering going on Caribbean cruises in bigger numbers than before. I look at it this way – that crash will not be the last one!

A wax dummy more like…
June 1, 2009 on 6:53 pm | In Culture | No CommentsThis years Britain’s Got Talent seems to have claimed more than it’s fair share of victims; oddball Scottish spinsters, tantrum-throwing ten year old girls with pushy mothers and generally all those who thought they ‘had it’ and did not as it turned out.
I was reading today the hype surrounding the red gown that judge Amanda Holden wore on the night of the Final – I do not think she looked like Jessica Rabbit at all. On our brand new LCD TV with all that heavy face paint and botox she resembled a wax dummy rather than an attractive 38 year old woman. You can take things too far you know.
