Shoes, shoes – I’m dreaming about them right now.
December 11, 2010 on 8:45 pm | In Culture | No CommentsMy son who lives abroad wants a really cool pair of new shoes for Xmas this year so I have been very busy browsing online at sites which sell good shoes and at a reasonable price. This has not been an easy quest as my son has very large and wide feet and it has never been a simple task to just buy him a pair of shoes anywhere. Even his school shoes were a job to find!
Brands such as Vasque Sundowner have been on my list of late as have others which make shoes more suite for wearing to work – he wants a combination of ‘cool’ with practicality thrown in for good measure. I have a day to go before I make my choice as I need them to be delivered in good time.

Life at sea a century ago was so different for the sailors of the day.
December 11, 2010 on 8:24 pm | In Culture | No CommentsI have been reading through the life story of my 3rd Great Grandfather who was a sea captain during the late 19th century. What a life he led and how tough such a job was back in those days. He sailed around the Indian and Atlantic Oceans on cargo bearing ships, it was a very dangerous choice of career especially for a young sea apprentice which he had been at the age of 14. The risk of injury and death at sea was very high, no unions back then or a good Maritime Injury Lawyer there to step in to protect your rights when you lost a limb or fell over board.
He wrote about many of his crew who were killed in accidents at sea from incidents that improved safety standards today see happen a lot less, but life at sea still remains a treacherous career for those who choose it. Just as well he survive – or I would not be here to tell you about it!

Where are all the shoppers?
December 10, 2010 on 3:02 pm | In Finance | No CommentsI have been out and about browsing the stores before I start to buy the Xmas presents and have noticed that most people are doing the same thing – looking but not really buying. This is especially telling in the toy stores, just a few short years back such stores would be jam packed in early December but you could drive a horse and cart through our local toy store yesterday. Obviously people are being careful and waiting to see what the retailers will offer in the way of discounts in the next couple of weeks.
I also shop online and do quite well in that regard but still haven’t gotten my head around the coupon-thing which I guess would make shopping much cheaper – schemes like onecall coupons are great if you are looking in the electrical line but I’d like some coupons for toy stores and have yet to come across any. So the hunt goes on but with time being of the essence I will have to get the wallet out pretty soon.
