Will your face hold up in front of the mirror this summer?

January 20, 2011 on 1:37 pm | In Culture | No Comments

This is turning into a regular little ‘holiday series’ or so it seems. There’s another aspect of this time of year that I have noticed by reading some of the women’s magazines lately…the upsurge in visits to the beauty salons and the increased sales in creams and potions that offer treatment for wrinkles. Interestingly a recent survey was held and it was found that creams sold at the local drugstore for around a few dollars a pot did just as good a job as those more expensive potions that cost hundreds.

Okay, the packaging on the pricier products is the often the big seller but you know whether you are getting your money’s worth when you look in the mirror!

The time of year to start slimming.

January 20, 2011 on 1:31 pm | In Culture, Travel | No Comments

As I have said we are thinking about where to go for our next vacation and as we want somewhere warm that means ‘bikini’ and other stuff to wear in the hot sun. If you notice this is time of year when sales for diet pills tend to increase as people do their sums and realise that summer is only about 16 weeks away, well, the warmer weather anyway.

This is also the month that people head off to the to gym and combined with the sales in diet paraphernalia that points to an interesting aspect of our culture – all that eating and drinking in December, without a care, and then some serious dieting the next month!

I feel like a vacation.

January 20, 2011 on 1:26 pm | In Culture, Travel | No Comments

It might seem strange at this time of year but I am already thinking about a vacation, it must be all this bitterly cold weather we have been having lately, and judging by the numbers of people filing in and out of the local travel agencies other people are thinking along the same lines as myself. Somewhere warm, really warm, is what I am after whereas others are probably after self-catering places like Outer Banks vacation rentals, self-catering seems to be the way to go these days.

Unless we are staying longer than a few days we opt for hotels but anything longer than a week in one place and we normally get a rental property. The most unusual place we have rented so far was in Tunisia where we stayed in Hammamet and we loved it. I hope the current situation there calms down because it is a lovely place to visit with the family.
