Accents and Dialects

December 4, 2007 on 5:16 pm | In Culture |

In reference to the previous post accents certainly are funny things. In fact a number of people constantly make the mistake of assuming I am Irish. I suppose that’s no real problem and usually I just inform them that I’m Belfast born, explain the difference and that’s that.

But there are those few we have met who insist on insisting that I AM Irish. They hear an accent with a ‘twang’ and that decides it for them. We met such a person on holiday recently; an english lady who is under the impression that everyone from Northern Ireland is Irish. Fair enough, Irish people make up a portion of the population there but everyone is of Irish descent who lives there.

As I say, most people accept they have made the wrong assumption yet this particular person was ready to start an argument with us about it!.
