Babyboomers are leading the way
July 6, 2008 on 7:25 am | In Culture |When you look back over the twentieth century the one aspect which really stands out with regards to human kind is how vastly human longevity has grown. Back in the 19th century the average woman could hope to live until her fifties - if she survived childbirth - and a fifty year old woman then looked as a seventy year old woman does now. Men, because they did not give birth, lived a few years longer, but like their female counterparts looked old before their time.
In the 20th century people began to live longer so that now the average lifespan for a woman is 80-something with men lagging behind at 70-something. Out of this has grown better healthcare for the elderly and now they have their own specific healthcare options such as medicare advantage which is tailored to address issues which affect those well past fifty and steaming towards their 80’s & 90’s.
Makes one wonder how long those babyboomers will stretch the human lifespan - do you think that one day it will be common for folk to celebrate their 110th birthday - and will middle age be around 70 rather than 50?
