They are brilliant! now they are not apple ipods but they are ‘as good’ and you can download loads of free games onto them for the kids, which is what we did. We had decided against the nintendo 3DS as our son has a problem with his sight and we had heard the 3D effect was not good for him. But everyone’s happy all the same. Maybe some day I will join the apple cart and buy myself an ipod too:)

We got a pair of binoculars and can highly recommend them although they most certainly are NOT for solar viewings – you must bear that in mind. There are many brands available for astronomy usage – among them nikon monarch binoculars and the more serious type for real enthusiasts but we found they did the job brilliantly when we attended the recent lunar eclipse. Don’t assume you wont look the real deal without a telescope, of course you need one for anything beyond the moon, but the binoculars did the trick for us perfectly.

Four years after the launch of electronic novels, the firm announced it has sold 105 e-books for every 100 printed books over the past six weeks. While e-book sales have previously outsold hardback books, never before have they exceeded sales of all books, in both hardback and paperback forms. The books can be read on a range of electronic devices – from Kindles to computers, iPods, iPhones, iPads and BlackBerrys.

In the U.K, where Amazon’s Kindle store opened only a year ago, e-books now outsell hardbacks at a ratio of two-to-one. Amazon began selling hard-cover and paperback books in July 1995. Twelve years later it launched e-books and by July 2010 Kindle book sales had surpassed sales of hardbacks. Six months later Kindle books began outselling paperbacks and now the format is more popular than all text books put together. The Kindle book-store offers more than 950,000 books for sale as well as more than 1.8 million free, out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books.

A study has found that female canine brains are different from that of their male counterparts. And in at least once task the females have the edge. Scientists studied a range of common household dogs of both sexes to see whether they understood a simple cognition task that humans understand by the age of one. The task involved the realisation that objects do not change shape simply because they disappear from view.

They set up a wooden board and using a system involving blue tennis balls and used four different scenarios. Using 25 female and 25 male dogs each was firstly shown either a small or large ball emerging and then reappearing. The animals were then shown a small or large ball disappearing that being replaced by the opposite of what had been taken away. Scientists then measured the dogs’ reactions to something that they would consider ‘impossible’ by measuring how long they stared at the new ball. But when they broke down the results they discovered that the male dogs had not noticed anything odd at all – yet the females had stared at the unexpected object for up to 30 seconds.

This was more than three times the time they spent when the ball did not change. The scientist explained there are three possible explanations for the phenomenon. The first is that evolution may have caused differences in the brains of the animals, while another is that females duties as child bearers mean their brains show greater nurturing skills. The female mind has been genetically geared towards nurturing and as ‘defenders of the nest’ this is how females operate. Something we already knew a long time ago.
