How’s your carbon footprint?
December 17, 2007 on 7:41 pm | In Culture, Technology |Some time ago we had a couple visit who were ‘environmentalists’. They had actually spent £500, each, more to get to our place by taking several coaches than if they had arrived by plane. ” We didn’t want to leave a carbon footprint ” so they said. They arrived with a couple of bikes in stow as well. These two people then turned out to be two of the most difficult people we have ever met. They wanted their towels and bed linen changed EACH day…even though such a thing is not environmentally friendly. They wanted extra soap, shampoo and airconditioning. All bad ‘emission-wise’. Funny how people chop and change their trendy views, eh?.
Now we are told that the simple act of cooking the Xmas dinner equals a carbon footprint of 6000 car trips around the world. 6000. Around the WORLD!. Who on earth does these studies?. Scientists (don’t we love’em?) have found that the nation cooking a turkey, stuffing and all the trimmings results in 51,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. And that inlcudes all the so-called ‘emissions’ released while raising each and every turkey.
Somehow folks I think we need to draw a line on all this. If we cannot sit down to our once-a-year Xmas feed without worrying about the darned environment then what have these killjoys done to our lives?.
Personally, we will be sitting down the the whole entire festive feast as usual this year. Cooked in the oven, with plenty of carbon dioxide to spare. Somehow it just wouldn’t taste the same any other way.
