Learning to read…in two languages at once

October 19, 2008 on 3:23 pm | In Culture |

Our son is a native English speaker but right now, at the age of six, he is attending school in France and so is learning to read and write in French. This poses some problems for us as we wish to ensure his english language skills remain his first priority.

Juggling two languages at once is no piece of cake but our son seems to be handling things fine right now. What we do to keep his english skills up to date and developing is to read books to him in the english language; we also buy him personalized books which add that extra element of interest for him. Anything really to keep him going at it.

Neither of us are qualified english teachers but we are finding that over the past couple of years, teaching James to read and write in our native english language, has taught us alot about how we speak ourselves.
