The damage we have done to our planet

February 2, 2008 on 9:34 pm | In Culture |

What re we doing to this planet of ours? humans have changed the Earth to such an extent that it has brought one huge chapter of the planet’s history to an end. What do you think?

Scientists at the University of Portsmouth said humans had physically altered the world so much that the holocene epoch, a period of geological history from 9,600BC has ended. They believe a new age - the anthropocene - has begun. So what does this mean for mankind in general?

Human activity has become the number one driver of most of the major changes in Earth’s topography and climate. Of course you can’t possibly have 6.5 billion people living on a planet the size of ours and exploiting every possible resource without creating huge changes in the physical, chemical and biological environment which will be reflected dramatically in our geological record of the planet.

Apparently in the last 200 years humans have made such an impact on the earth’s environment that we have heralded a new age, all on our own. And it does not look good.
